Float Judging Criteria

Here’s exactly what our judges will be looking for. Each float is scored from 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest) in six categories, for a total of up to 30 points.

| Originality | How unique is the float, and does it suit the holidays? Judges look for a fresh idea, or a familiar idea used in a new way. | 1 – 5 |
| Public Appeal | Does it appeal to people of all ages and backgrounds? Can viewers understand the theme without explanation? | 1 – 5 |
| Workmanship | Quality of the basic construction, detail in the design, and how well materials are used to build the float’s objects. | 1 – 5 |
| Animation / Sound | Any motion or sound on or alongside the float. | 1 – 5 |
| Color | Are the colors and color combinations attractive, and do they fit the holiday theme? | 1 – 5 |
| Overall | The overall effectiveness of the float’s presentation. | 1 – 5 |
| Total | Combined score of all six categories | 30 max |
What counts as a float?
A float is an elaborately decorated, three-dimensional figure or scene. It may sit on a wheeled chassis, move under its own power, or be towed by a vehicle or pulled by animals. For this parade, the scene should relate to welcoming winter and the holidays that come with it.
